Introduction

A 2-day hike up Mount Toubkal (the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 m / 13,671 ft) is totally doable and a popular challenge. Here’s a quick breakdown of how it typically goes:

Day 1: Imlil (1,740 m) to Refuge (3,200 m)

• Start Point: Imlil (about 1.5–2 hrs drive from Marrakech)

• Distance: ~11 km (6.8 miles)

• Duration: 5–6 hours

• Ascent: ~1,460 m

• Overnight: Toubkal Refuge (either Les Mouflons or the French CAF Refuge)

You’ll hike through scenic Berber villages, follow the river, pass the Sidi Chamharouch shrine, and continue up to the refuge. Most people start this hike mid-morning.

Day 2: Refuge to Summit (4,167 m) and Back to Imlil

• Start Time: Very early (around 4–5 am for sunrise summit)

• Distance: ~17 km round trip

• Ascent: ~967 m up, then ~2,400 m descent all the way to Imlil

• Duration: 9–10 hours total

The summit push is tough—steep and usually icy or snowy (depending on the season), but the sunrise views are spectacular. After summiting, you’ll descend back to the refuge for a short rest and then continue all the way down to Imlil.
